Student Affairs Internship Fund: How to Get Paid for Unpaid Internships!

Funding Opportunities for Internships

Internships are a great opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in an industry they are interested in.  However, it’s difficult to commit to an unpaid summer internship opportunity when you need to make money.

The Fleishman Center understands this issue and administers the Student Affairs Internship Fund and the Boog Internship Fund to sponsor talented students so they have financial support while completing summer internships.

The Student Affairs Internship Fund

Through the Internship Fund, several undergraduate and graduate students will receive $500 to $5,000 to defray the cost of pursuing an unpaid internship. In the summer of 2019, over 40 students were awarded funds through the Student Affairs Internship Fund.

The Boog Internship Fund

Through the Boog Internship Fund, one undergraduate student will receive $15,000 to defray the additional costs associated with participating in a summer internship!

Binghamton students just like you have received these sources of funding and it opened up valuable opportunities for them!

For example, MBA student, Katelynn Slater was able to spend the summer as a Marketing intern for LUMA, here in Binghamton.

As Katelynn states, “I was looking for an internship that would enhance my skills and provide me with exposure to new opportunities. When I accepted the internship with LUMA, I thought it was a perfect fit for me because one of its primary aspects was centered around marketing, which is what I plan on pursuing in graduate school. However, since it was unpaid, I wondered how I would be able to stay in Binghamton for the summer. The provisions that were awarded to me through the 2019 Student Affairs Internship Fund allowed me to be more confident in this decision.”

Katelynn said, “This funding has helped to make my internship experience very gratifying. It was wonderful to know that throughout the summer I could approach new experiences with this internship, which would ultimately benefit me in a career setting, and still have a way to provide for my necessities. I was able to be more involved and help create an impact in the Binghamton community. I am very grateful to everyone who has made this possible.
