If you are like me, most of your life you have had very limited knowledge of career options outside of the ones you hear all the time: doctor, lawyer, teacher, artist, and so on! This made it especially difficult for me to decide a major let alone a career while I was in college. One of the best tools that expanded my knowledge of careers was learning about the RIASEC Code! The holland theory is a way to generally categorize people and work environments into six different groups, each with specific themes. Although there are 6 letters, we are going to focus on the S and the I of the code.
S stands for Social! Those who identify with this theme tend to be caring, cooperative, friendly, understanding and enjoy helping, teaching, coaching, and serving others. The I stands for Investigative! Those who resonate with this theme tend to be scientific, scholarly, curious, logical, independent and analytical. They really enjoy analyzing information, working with ideas and concepts, and solving problems. So let’s say you find yourself resonating with the themes in each of these letters but are unsure how to find careers that support both. Where do you go from here?
One option is to go to O*NET! It is an amazing search engine for careers and one of its filters utilizes the RIASEC Code. Listed below are the first 20 careers that appear when you search for those that support a SI kind of working environment:
Acute Care Nurses
Critical Care Nurses
