Student Organization Spotlight: Latin American Student Union (LASU)

We are very excited to feature the Latin American Student Union (LASU) for our Student Organization Spotlight this week! Kassandra Moran answered questions on behave of this student organization.  Please view her responses below to learn more!

What is the goal of your student organization?

The goal of LASU is to amplify multicultural students voices on campus by providing a safe inclusive space for all students. We strive to create political, social, and cultural conversations on campus for students to bring awareness to issues that are pertinent to our communities and within Latin America.

Who is welcome to join your student organization?

Any students are welcome to join LASU as general body members! If a student is interested in getting to learn more about LASU and the executive board, we offer an internship spring semester!

How can students connect with your organization?

Why did you first join this student organization?

I joined this organization because like many I found myself feeling out of place at Binghamton my first semester on campus. Soon enough it was my second semester and I knew I that I wanted to become more active on campus. I had heard of LASU being an inclusive and welcoming organization, so I took advantage of the internship opportunity LASU had offered that semester. Eventually I found myself so interested to a point of running for the executive board!

What are some examples of events or programs that your student organization participates in or plans?

Latinx Heritage Month- We host general body meetings twice a week for the entire month, and feature guest speakers and collaborate with different organizations on campus.
Palabras- All students are welcomed to share and present any art form to the public
Latinx Festival at Binghamton Highschool- This is an annual festival we hold for students at Binghamton Highschool that allows them to get a glimpse of college life.

As a student leader, how important is it for students to get involved on campus?

I think it is really important that students get involved on campus. Especially if you are an underrepresented student on campus becoming involved on campus will give you the chance to feel surrounded by those similar to you. This is what I love about LASU, they are my LASU Familia.

What skills do you feel members gain from being a part of your organization?

Professionalism, Time Management, Communication/Presentation skills, Leadership
