Finding Employers with Inclusive Work Cultures: The Corporate Equality Index

For many people, finding a job isn’t just about securing a paycheck. It’s about finding an environment that provides opportunities for personal and professional growth, and that offers a welcoming and inclusive environment to do so.

But how do you know if a company offers a diverse and inclusive workplace? There are various ways to gather that information, including a company’s website (do they have a section about ‘office culture’ or offer ‘employee resource groups’?)

Another great resource to do some research is the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index. The Corporate Equality Index is a national benchmarking tool on corporate policies, practices and benefits pertinent to LGBTQ identifying employees. It rates employers on various categories, including workplace protections (i.e. policies include sexual orientation and gender identity and expression for all operations), inclusive benefits (i.e. equal health coverage for transgender individuals without exclusion for medically necessary care), and supporting an inclusive culture and corporate social responsibility.

It is released on an annual basis with updated rankings and information with a goal to advance the best practices for LGBTQ workplace inclusion. Check out the 2020 report here to see which employers got top scores and how they are creating equitable workplace environments.
