Are you looking to volunteer in the community? Are you passionate about working with youth?
The Youth Initiative at the Center for Civic Engagement offers Binghamton University students the opportunity to do both. Our Binghamton University Community Schools model allows our staff to work closely with over 10 local school districts in Broome County to connect BU students with internship and volunteer opportunities that help support the kids in the community academically, socially, and emotionally. Our interns and volunteers can offer this support through tutoring, mentoring, after school assistance, and more.
During these opportunities, students can strengthen their leadership skills, develop a greater awareness of issues in the community, and form meaningful connections with both children and faculty. Many students who are interested in a career in education (teaching, administration, counseling etc) benefit from an internship with the Youth Initiative, however, you don’t need to have an interest in education to benefit from interning us! Future engineers, nurses, doctors, non-profit leaders and more have benefited from interning with YI in the following ways: learning about working on collaborative teams, working with youth, understanding the experiences of a community different than your home community and working side by side with school and community leaders. Collaborative leadership, practical time management skills and personal growth are the top things our students share that they have learned through this experience.
We want to hear from students about their passions and interests and find ways to incorporate them into a service opportunity!
