Alumni Find Rewarding Career in Education at Success Academy

Three Binghamton University alumni have been honored with Success Academy 2021 Excellence in Education Awards for demonstrating exceptional talent and commitment to educating underserved children. Success Academy is a high-performing public charter school network in New York City that serves mostly low-income students. Award recipients demonstrated an outstanding ocommitment and talent, and share about their rewarding career in education.

Muhammad Mughal (’20)

Muhammad Mughal (’20)

Muhammad Mughal ’20 is an associate teacher at SA Springfield Gardens, and won an Excellence Award in our Rookie of the Year category, which recognizes first-year staff members who have embraced the challenge of delivering an outstanding schooling experience for kids — all the more challenging during the pandemic — and made a noticeably positive impact on their community. Reflecting on his award and his first year of teaching, Muhammad said: “The acknowledgment from scholars that fifth-grade science class was a safe place for them this past year and that they enjoyed being in the class was my proudest moment of all.”

Akua Adusei (’18)

Akua Adusei ’18 is a seventh-grade science teacher at SA Springfield Gardens Middle School, and won an Excellence Award for Academic Achievement, which recognizes lead teachers who have inspired their scholars to perform at the highest academic level based on academic data. Looking back at her career path since joining SA in 2019, Akua said: ”I decided to work in education because I have always loved working with children. My mother also always stressed the importance of education from a young age. I understand its value and the doors it opens, and I wanted to continue opening doors for future generations.”

Oyindamola Lawal (’17)

Oyindamola Lawal (’17)

Oyindamola Lawal ’17 is a business operations manager at SA East Flatbush Middle School. She won an Excellence Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, which honors individuals who have carried out actions that have resulted in progress toward a more inclusive environment for all staff and scholars and contributed to fostering respect for others, sensitivity, and a sense of belonging. On her award, Oyindamola said: “Advancing Diversity, Equity, and inclusion is a continuous process. I believe that one of the best things you can do is maintain an open mind. It will only give you a broader mind and worldview, which supercharges your decision making.”
