We all know how important it is to see ourselves represented in the world around us, whether that be in literature, film, music, advertising, the workplace, the classroom, etc. Luckily at Binghamton University, there are several avenues for LGBTQIA+ students to form and maintain connections within their community.
One such opportunity is The Event! Derek Jorden (Jorden), Resident Director within the Dickinson College residential community and the primary coordinator of The Event, describes it as “a welcoming space for students who identify as queer, questioning, and allies to come together, meet staff who share these identities, and connect with others in a supportive environment. It’s an opportunity for students to see themselves represented in leadership roles on campus while enjoying a fun and safe space.”
Faculty and staff from offices across campus will be present to mingle with students, teach them about their offices’ resources, and play Minute-to-Win-It games for prizes! Some participating offices include:
- Multicultural Resource Center
- Fleishman Career Center
- B-Healthy
- Q Center
- Bartle Library
- Department of Anthropology
- School of Pharmacy Admissions Office
- Watson Office for Diversity
- Residential Life
- Enrollment Management
- Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Oh, and did I mention that there will be cupcakes that you can decorate with your pride flag colors?! 🧁🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
The Event will take place this Wednesday, September 18th, from 4:28-6:30pm in the C4 Multi-Purpose Room (MPR). This specific start time commemorates the 50th anniversary of Stonewall (6/28). We can’t wait to see you there! If you are unable to attend, please know that there are so many LGBTQ+ faculty and staff who are eager to mentor students and provide academic, professional, and personal guidance. Don’t hesitate to reach out to these offices for support!
