International Alumni Spotlight-Kanishk Barhanpurkar: Software Engineer at Universal Instruments Corporation

Kanishk is no stranger to the Fleishman Center. He was a former student staff member at our office helping us with our website development and supported the promotion of our major events at Binghamton University. He has also been a career champion to many students who have approached him with questions about how to be better prepared when networking with employers and alumni or submitting job applications.

Recently, Kanishk attended the International Alumni Panel for the International Student Career Success Week (September 9-13) and also participated in the Roundtable: Centering Inclusion in the Workplace (September 18) at Fleishman Center. He shared his insights and expertise with students who attended both events, further demonstrating his dedication to students’ success and his commitment to Binghamton University.

I want to share his recommendations and insights with you for international students who want to be successful in landing a job in the United States.

1. What inspired you to pursue a career in your current field?

My passion for mathematics and technology drove me to study computer science in India. This naturally led me to my current role as a Software Engineer at Universal Instruments Corporation, where I focus on complex challenges in the semiconductor industry.

2. What did you do prior to coming to the US?

I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Science in Bengaluru and worked as a Software Engineer at a health startup, where I gained experience in developing software solutions for healthcare operations.

3. Who or what resources helped you in your career journey?

Professors and peers at Binghamton University, along with networking opportunities through the university’s career services and tech meetups, were key. Online communities like GitHub and job platforms like LinkedIn and Indeed also provided valuable support.

4. What obstacles did you need to overcome if there were any while looking for employment? And what helped you overcome those obstacles?

Navigating visa processes and adapting to the US job market were challenging. Networking with alumni and seeking their guidance helped me understand what employers look for and how to prepare for interviews.

5. Any advice you would like to give to other international students who want to be employed in the United States?

Start networking early and seek guidance from those who’ve been through the process. Highlight your unique skills during interviews and stay patient—persistence pays off.
