Announcing: New York State Government’s New Internship Portal!

The NEW New York State Leaders Program centralizes internships across New York State government agencies, and was intentionally created to better connect college students with careers in public service and opportunity to gain practical experience and mentorship. Whether you’re interested in law, policy-making, administration, or research, these internships can be a great way to experience the field firsthand and build professional connections in New York State public service careers. Here is an overview of the program and instructions on how to apply!

Why should you apply?

There are hundreds of statewide public service internships offered each year, available in the fall, spring and summer and many are PAID opportunities! Internships cover a wide range of disciplines and specializations within executive branch government agencies, from the Department of Health to the Division of Criminal Justice Services. Students will develop essential skills like policy analysis, legal research, communication and problem solving through real-world projects that will prepare them for a future career!

The deadline for applications for the SPRING semester is December 18, 2024!

The program offers two main internship tracks:

Undergraduate Track: This track is open to current undergraduate students who are interested in exploring careers in New York State government.

Graduate Track: This track is designed for graduate students, offering more advanced projects and leadership opportunities. 

What is the process to apply?

  1. Create an account in the Student Intern Program Portal: Visit https://nysinternships.cs.ny.gov/nnyl/ to create an account to view job descriptions, review and identify preferred internships, submit applications, and upload resumes. 
  1. Search for available internships by filtering degree concentrations, occupational interest, location, and state agency.
  1. Apply for multiple internship opportunities with one application
  1. Each host office or agency reviews applications, conducts interviews, and offers student intern positions to selected candidates
  1. Keep in mind that agencies are hiring on an ongoing basis!
