Use “Career Guides” to explore with our nation’s largest employer: The Federal Government

The Federal Government is our nation’s largest employer with 2.1 million civilian employees in careers spanning from aerospace to the creative arts and everything in between. With over 400 various bureaus, departments, agencies, committees and subcommittees across the United States and in 160 countries – you better have a strategy for exploring career paths in the federal government! GoGovernment.org, USAjobs and the Fleishman Career Center will become the backbone of your strategy to break into federal careers.

If you’re reading this, you are probably aware that USAJobs is the federal government’s official jobs platform for most federal agencies. You are also probably aware that it’s kind of a beast to navigate. GoGovernment.org is a separate website created by The Partnership for Public Service to try to tame that beast! In this blog post, I will highlight GoGovernment’s Career Guides to explore various government agencies based on your skills and career interest.

Each Career Guide provides an overview of that particular industry and names the top federal agencies that typically hire employees in that field. It also provides a “Job Series Code” that you can use to search and apply for associated positions available on USAJobs. Here is an example below from the Medical and Public Health Career Guide:

In addition to exploring careers using the Career Guides, consider also taking the Quiz: Find the Right Federal Agency for you and gain a deeper understanding of which federal agencies may align with your interests, skills and preferences.

Remember, the Fleishman Career Center is here to help you navigate each step of this process. Set up an appointment with a career consultant to talk about how we can help!
