How can I begin Volunteering on Campus?

Are you looking to get involved on campus organizations and make an impact within the Binghamton community? Are you looking to go off-campus and make a change to the greater Binghamton area? Well you’re in luck! There are various ways to get involved with our community and leave a positive impact.

#1: Center for Civic Engagement (CCE)

Given that voting season is in session, it is important to understand the impact we have, even as college students! The CCE office is located next to the Fleishman Center’s Office, in front of the Market Place. Their office is committed to engaging the student community, especially the multicultural community, in  ‘actively participating in democratic and civic engagement’. Furthermore, being in the cluster for Human Services, CCE has 4 main branches so students can provide service both on and off campus. These branches include: impactBING CORE volunteer, Youth Initiative, Community-Engaged Learning, and Pathway to Inclusive Pathway

#2: Volunteer ORG

Maybe you are looking for a group of individuals who aim to foster community and aid different areas within the Binghamton area or beyond. Joining a campus volunteer organization would be a great opportunity to experience this community-orientated environment. Don’t know where to begin looking?

Circle K

“Our commitments involve longtime relationships with university organizations such as the Boys and Girls club, SUNY Kids, and the local pre-school program. Beyond just our relationships with SUNY Binghamton, we have also made sure to be involved with local organizations, including the Binghamton Rescue Mission, Broome County Humane Society, and Mom’s house, just to name a few. These various organizations are often aimed at helping underprivileged families, children, and animals, and these are exactly the type of people who we want give support to.”

Corazoncitos

“Corazoncitos provides children and families with opportunities for social and academic enrichment, emphasizing respect for the people and land around them. We will improve the quality of life for children, families, and the society at large by supporting the Corazón de Dahlia center in Peru, which offers tangible alternatives in order to advance childrens’ education through training, guidance, counseling, and support.”

Binghamton University Habitat for Humanity

“Here at Broome Habitat, we construct, rehabilitate and preserve homes and communities. We then identify qualified partner families based on our program’s income guidelines and partnership criteria. Once selected, we provide support and guidance to families as they pursue the mortgage process.”

And there we go! Listed above are a few groups on campus that can direct you to using those interpersonal skills and communication skills that are often seen in the Educated and Human Services Career cluster. Once you take your first steps to stepping out of your comfort zone and begin in your outreach efforts, you may join an eboard or take on a job position and soon guide an organization for yourself! By that, you can provide future students like yourself to give back to the community and pay it forward!
