Experiment with Your Search: 3 Strategies to Find Science Internships on Handshake

Summer internship search at a stalemate? Spending hours searching, but not quite finding what you’re looking for? Let’s hit the reset button on your summer internship search and explore strategies to help uncover science-related opportunities on Handshake.

Handshake is a great place to start your summer internship search because the positions posted are geared toward current students and recent graduates. Even still, there are over 10,000 internships currently posted, so let’s take a look at three different ways to narrow that search.

Strategy #1: Leverage the Binghamton Collections

Binghamton University creates “collections” within the Handshake job and internship search platform to categorize opportunities and highlight employers we have strong partnerships with and/or a solid alumni base with. There are currently 85 internships included in the “Science Opportunities” Collection!

Strategy #2: Utilize Advanced Filters

Oftentimes, filters are used to narrow your search. However, it can also be helpful to use a filter like “Industry” to broaden your options. For example, selecting industries such as Environmental Science or Pharmaceuticals can expand your search to include all opportunities within those fields. You can always add keywords or filter for specific job roles to get more targeted results. This approach helps you avoid eliminating opportunities if the keywords you’re searching are too specific.

Strategy #3: Follow Organizations That Interest You

Have your eye on specific organizations within your area of interest or location? Follow them on Handshake to get notified when they post new opportunities. Beyond just following them, visit their Handshake profile to view upcoming events, learn about company culture and benefits, and, if available, message a recruiter directly.

When engaging on Handshake, it’s always to your benefit to have an updated profile. This ensures Handshake can show you the most relevant opportunities and helps recruiters learn more about your skills and interests.

Handshake is just one internship search platform to add to your rotation.
