How to Leverage LinkedIn as a Healthcare Student

Whether you’re preparing for clinical rotations, applying to graduate programs, or exploring your first full-time role, LinkedIn can be one of your most valuable tools. With more than 750 million users, LinkedIn lets you build a professional presence, connect with others in your field, and explore career paths in healthcare.

Build Your Professional Brand

Your LinkedIn profile is often the first impression you make on recruiters, employers, and even peers. Think of it as your digital introduction.

  • Start with a professional photo. Wear professional clothing, choose a clear background, and make sure your face is well lit. You can even use the Iris Photobooth in the Fleishman Career Center to take one for free. Tip: For healthcare, a lab coat, stethoscope, or scrubs can be appropriate attire for your headshot.
  • Write a strong headline and About section. Your headline can reflect your current role or area of study, but remember to make it stand out. Try to avoid something generic like “Student at Binghamton University.” Think about aspects of healthcare you are passionate about (like a specialty area or patient population). In your About section, tell your story, including where you’ve been, where you are now, and where you’re headed.
  • Highlight your education and experiences. Include your degree, major, and expected graduation date. List clinical rotations, internships, research, patient care roles, and volunteer experiences. For each, explain what you did, how you did it, and why it mattered. Use bullet points and include results when possible.
  • Add your skills and certifications. Employers often search by skill or license, so make sure to include things like Basic Life Support (BLS), CNA, EMT, or Pharmacy Technician certifications. Don’t forget soft skills, such as teamwork and communication.
  • Ask for endorsements and recommendations. Professors, preceptors, supervisors, or peers can validate your skills and credibility.

Expand Your Network

Networking on LinkedIn isn’t about collecting hundreds of connections. It’s about building meaningful relationships.

  • Use the Binghamton Alumni Tool. Visit Binghamton University’s LinkedIn page and click on the Alumni tab. Filter by major, location, or job title to find alumni working in areas that interest you. Check out our alumni tool resource for more information!
  • Search for people in your field. Use the People Search tool to find professionals at hospitals, clinics, or research institutions you admire.
  • Join healthcare-related groups. These can help you learn best practices, ask questions, and stay updated on industry trends.
  • Send personalized connection requests. When reaching out, include a short note about who you are and why you’d like to connect. For example:
“Hi [Name], I’m a nursing student at Binghamton interested in [specialty]. I’d love to connect and learn more about your experience at [organization].”

Explore Employers and Opportunities

LinkedIn gives you insight into organizations beyond what you’ll find on their websites.

  • Research healthcare employers. Look into things like work culture, Magnet designation, residency programs, or continuing education opportunities.
  • Stay updated on news. Follow hospitals, clinics, and healthcare systems to see updates, events, and job postings.
  • Use the Job Search tool. Save searches, set alerts, and use “Easy Apply” when available to simplify your applications.

Stay Active

The more active you are on LinkedIn, the more visible you become.

  • Share your professional experiences. Post about rotations, conferences, or certifications.
  • Engage with your network. Like, comment, and repost content that aligns with your professional interests.
  • Celebrate milestones. Recognize your growth and thank those who’ve supported your journey.
