For any aspiring writer, having a space to express yourself is essential. Here at Binghamton University, there are countless clubs on campus that can help you build a portfolio, share your work with others, and find a writing community with your fellow students. Here are 5 clubs that every writer should join!
As the official newspaper for Binghamton University, Pipe Dream was founded back in 1946 when BU was still Triple Cities College. This makes Pipe Dream the oldest and largest club on campus! For students with an interest in journalism, Pipe Dream provides the opportunity for undergraduates to gain experience in both journalistic writing and editing. Students can join any of Pipe Dream’s sections, including News, Sports, Opinions, Arts & Culture, Fun, Copy, Design, Photography, Illustration, Digital, and Business and Newsroom Technology. Pipe Dream publishes print issues every Monday and Thursday, as well as online content throughout the week. All are welcome, and no prior experience is necessary!
Between classes, work, and extracurriculars, it can be difficult for college students to find the time to write for themselves. That’s why the Storytelling Workshop Club provides structured periods for students to work on their own creative writing projects and share them with others. This can include novels, short stories, plays, poems, or even D&D campaigns! Students also have the opportunity to read other people’s work and provide them with constructive feedback. If you’re experiencing writer’s block, there are even themed events to help guide you with specific prompts! If you’re searching for a community of writers, Storytelling Workshop Club is the ideal group for you!
Are you a writer with a special interest in poetry? Consider joining the Poetry Club! BU’s poets meet weekly for communal writing based on a weekly prompt, as well as to share their with each other. They also host Open Mic nights that are open to both students and faculty, providing students with the chance to publicly read their poetry. The Poetry Club even publishes its own zine every spring semester, where its members can become published poets!
Every writer understands the importance of reading. Luckily for us, Binghamton Bookworms provides the chance for readers to socialize with each other and discuss their favorite books! Every month, members nominate multiple books before voting on their favorite for the whole club to read together. For writers, a book club is the perfect opportunity to learn about what other people have to say about different writing choices. Not only will you think about what you appreciate in writing, but you’ll also gain insight into aspects that you may never even have considered before!
Despite often being overlooked, comic books are just as valuable as any other form of writing. Whether you enjoy reading comic books or even writing your own, BU’s Comic Book Club is a great place for students to meet other fans of the medium. Every week, members meet to engage in interactive activities and discuss their favorite comic books together, often hosting themed nights to celebrate different parts of pop culture!
Takeaway
Writing does not have to be a solitary activity. Instead, it can be a chance to learn from others and gain feedback for your own work. For writers searching for a sense of community, each of these clubs can help to fuel your creativity in their own unique ways!
