Finding Internships Through Networking

Who You Know or What You Know?

Did you know that networking is the #1 way that people find jobs and internships? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 70% of jobs are found through networking rather than traditional job applications.

What is Networking?

Networking is the process of building relationships and alliances. It includes systematically seeking out and connecting with individuals who can support your career endeavors. This can be in the form of information about career fields, referrals to other professionals, advice on a particular career path, or in finding job or internship leads.

How do you Network Effectively?

Building connections is a process, and you should view networking as a consistent part of your professional development. There are many resources you can use to help build and maintain your network over time, including websites like LinkedIn and MentorMatch and career events like Binghamton’s very own Job and Internship Fair. You can get an overview of all the career-related events happening on campus with HireBing through Handshake. You can also schedule an appointment with a consultant at the Fleishman Career Center to learn more about networking strategies, building up your LinkedIn profile, and much more!
