The New York State Department of Taxation and finance offers challenging careers in the field of professional auditing at ten locations within New York State and Chicago, Il. We recruit accounting majors for Tax Auditor Trainee positions. Appointees participate in a comprehensive two-year traineeship during which classroom and on-the-job training is provided in such areas as tax law, rules and regulations, as well as automated accounting systems, departmental audit policies, guidelines, and procedures. In addition to day-to-day supervisory guidance, Trainees receive formal written evaluations of their performance at regular intervals.
Duties: Tax Auditors perform field audits of the financial records of taxpayers to verify that business and individuals are in compliance with the tax laws, rules and regulations of the State of New York. They are assigned to one of the Department’s ten district offices and are required to travel extensively in the performance of their duties, including overnight travel. Such factors as tax specialty assignment, e.g. sales tax, personal income tax, corporation franchise tax, etc., and district office assignment will determine the extent of the overnight travel. Generally, it could involve up to 50% of their time.
