The Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute seeks biochemist to serve as a lab researcher in molecular biophysics and structural biology laboratories. Job responsibilities include assisting in conducting highly specialized biochemical research involving the application of structural biology approaches to the problems of molecular biophysics and proteomics. The work entails construction of expression plasmids for novel genes from the human and other genomes, expression of such constructs in bacterial and yeast hosts, and purification and evaluation of the resultant recombinant proteins and nucleic acids. The successful candidate will collaborate with other team members to characterize these biomolecules biochemically and biophysically, and prepare suitable quantities of these proteins for structural studies.
Requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in an appropriate life science discipline such as biochemistry, molecular biology. This experience must include familiarity with molecular biology and the expression and purification of recombinant proteins. Must have excellent technical skills, a high degree of attention to experiment details, good communication skills, and a strong work ethic. The ability to read and understand scientific papers and the ability to apply new techniques and protocols reported in the literature is also required. Some knowledge and training in biophysical techniques, NMR spectroscopy, and X-ray crystallography is desirable.
Salary range is commensurate with experience.
