Professional Associations

American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) is a professional organization dedicated to advancing the biological sciences through research, education, public policy, and professional development. AIBS serves a broad community of scientists, educators, students, and scientific societies across disciplines such as ecology, environmental science, genetics, evolution, microbiology, conservation biology, physiology, and other life science fields. The organization publishes scientific resources, supports science advocacy efforts, and provides programs designed to strengthen the biological sciences workforce.

Who should use this resource:
Students and professionals interested in biology, environmental science, ecology, conservation, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, research, or other life science careers. This resource is especially valuable for students exploring research careers, graduate school pathways, science policy, science communication, or careers connected to biological research and education.

Why it’s helpful:
AIBS provides opportunities for students to engage with the broader biological sciences community while gaining exposure to research, science policy, and professional development topics. Students can access career resources, educational programming, scientific publications, and networking opportunities that help them better understand career pathways within the life sciences. The organization also offers programs and initiatives related to science communication, leadership, and policy engagement, helping students develop a broader perspective on how biological research influences society and public decision-making. Participation in professional organizations such as AIBS can help students build professional networks, stay informed about developments in the field, and strengthen preparation for graduate study and scientific careers.
