From the organization our mission is playing four basic Korean traditional instruments, which have been played for about 2000 years. We will also learn the historical background of those unique instruments such as how and where the instruments first originated, the purposes they served to the Korean ancestors, and the stories and myths behind those instruments. As the only performing cultural group currently among the Binghamton University’s
Korean student body, we would also teach other cultural aspects as well as how to perform as
professionally on stage while wearing traditional uniforms.
Ever since Sulpoong’s origin, we have aimed to spread and teach Korean culture through music and art. The term poongmul is a Korean word that stands for Korean tradition folk music. Though what we do as a poongmul performance group in Binghamton University seems simple, our involvement transcends beyond drumming and dancing It is one of the ways we express our cultural heritage and pride.
To be specific, every year, our involvement in this school expands. We make many different appearances ranging from charity shows to cultural events and even in Spring Fling. Even outside of Binghamton University, we have performed annually at the Korean Parade in NYC, children libraries and even Binghamton community area. In Binghamton University, Sulpoong has it’s own performance every year during Spring semester. This show consists of many unique Korean traditional performances put together by the members of Sulpoong, ranging from dances, sitting performances and more.
