Pre-Health Shadowing

Pre-Health Shadowing is a student-founded nonprofit that provides free virtual shadowing opportunities for students exploring healthcare careers. Students can participate in live sessions or watch recorded sessions featuring professionals across medicine, nursing, dentistry, physician assistant, physical therapy, pharmacy, public health, research, and other health professions. Sessions provide insight into professionals’ education and training, career paths, day-to-day work, clinical experiences, and advice for students, with live sessions also offering opportunities for Q&A. Students can complete an assessment after participating and earn a certificate verifying their participation.

Who should use this resource:
Pre-health students who want to explore different healthcare professions and specialties, learn directly from healthcare professionals, or supplement their in-person career exploration. The platform is especially useful for students who have limited access to traditional shadowing because of location, scheduling, transportation, or professional connections. This resource is especially useful for students comparing options such as physician, nursing, PA, pharmacy, rehabilitation professions, dentistry, veterinary medicine, public health, research, and other clinical or health-related careers. Students can use the sessions to understand differences in training, responsibilities, work environments, and career paths while identifying professions they may want to explore further through in-person experiences.

Why it’s helpful:
Pre-Health Shadowing makes career exploration more accessible and flexible by allowing students to learn from professionals across many healthcare fields without relying solely on local shadowing opportunities. Students can use the sessions to compare professions and specialties, better understand healthcare training and work environments, and prepare more intentionally for future in-person shadowing or clinical experiences. Because individual health professions programs may differ in whether they recognize virtual shadowing toward their expectations, students should confirm requirements with programs they are considering and view virtual shadowing as a complement to hands-on and in-person healthcare experiences whenever possible. These sessions should supplement rather than replace in-person shadowing,
