In this B-Real Talk with Binghamton University’s Chapter of Society of Women Engineers (SWE), we get insights from SWE’s President, Valeria Gonzalez (she/her), and the Corporate Outreach Chair, Mary Grace Roche (she/her), and explore what it means to build belonging, confidence, and leadership as a woman pursuing engineering and other traditionally male-dominated fieldsThe conversation highlights moments when feeling invisible or underestimated became opportunities for growth, self-advocacy, and resilience. Through supportive mentorship, collaborative projects, and community-driven leadership experiences, SWE has helped shape a sense of purpose and identity in engineering, empowering students to step into roles they may not have imagined and build skills through real teamwork and service. Looking ahead, Valeria and Mary Grace Roche envision a future where diversity is celebrated, equity is intentional, and students from all backgrounds can enter STEM with confidence and thrive.
