Networking Opportunities On Campus

The Binghamton University campus is like a small city, and there are over 1,000 campus employees who perform the necessary functions to keep it operational–including a series of professionals with Education and Human Services-related focuses! Being that this is a college campus, many of the offices have functions related to Education and Human Services, and as such they offer opportunities to learn more about your industry of interest and connect with professionals. Reach out and ask to set up an informational interview! Here are a few offices to check out:

  1. Library Services

Binghamton University Library Services purchases, organzies, and maintains the University’s collection of books and digital media. They strive to cultivate a community where students can learn and study. Library science is a great career option for students who have a love of learning and are interested in education, but might not necessarily want to teach. Librarians support students in their education while also caring for books, media, and historical pieces. Connect with a library staff member to learn more about this industry and get career advice!

  1. Student Transition and Success

The Office of Student Transition and Success offers programs and resources to support students’ academic, personal, and professional development as they transition through their Binghamton collegiate experience. The staff help students navigate academic and personal challenges, so the skills they utilize to perform their duties are transferable across most student-facing roles (including teaching and student affairs) as well as social work and counseling positions. The office offers peer success coach positions for students, which is a great way to gain experience working with students providing support to people in need of guidance.

  1. Counseling Center

The Binghamton University Counseling Center provides counseling and referral services for students in need of assistance. The Counseling Center offers a variety of services for students, including individual sessions, group sessions, workshops, consultations, telecounseling, telepsychiatry, and referrals. Students interested in psychotherapy, counseling, social work, and related fields can learn a lot from the professionals in this office.

  1. Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs

The Provost is the person at the top of academic affairs, the Office of the Provost is responsible for overseeing everything relating to academics, including classes, faculty, research, and academic initiatives. Students interested in higher education administration and student affairs might find the work done at this office to be interesting!   1. Residential Life

Residential Life is a huge part of the campus community. Most students live on campus at some point, and the residential life staff work to make the living communities a new home for our students. On top of that, they support them through the transition to college and any crisis that may occur. Networking within residential life is a good course of action for those interested in education and any student-facing role. The office also deals with a lot of crisis resolution, which could also be of interest to students looking to enter counseling, therapy, and social work.

  1. Center for Civic Engagement

The Center for Civic Engagement coordinates student volunteers in the local community. It conducts outreach to arrange partnerships with local charities and nonprofit organizations and then organizes student volunteers and interns to help out. Placing students in the local community serves to better the area and teach students a wide range of skills. Networking within the CCE would be beneficial for those interested in nonprofits, community organization, and student affairs.

  1. CARE Team

The CARE (Consultation, Advocacy, Referral, and Education) Team does everything described in their acronym: they support students, advocate for their needs, refer students to additional assistance and resources, and educate students on ways to attend to their needs. The staff performs case management and follows up with students who are in need of support and attention. Students interested in social work and counseling can gain practical knowledge from CARE Team members.

  1. Human Resources

Binghamton University has a Human Resources department! This office handles payroll, posts jobs, manages employees, and supports employees if they are in need. It performs the same functions as HR departments in other companies. Students looking into Human Resources careers can network within this department.
