Emily Ziemba
Career Engagement Graduate Assistant

My name is Emily Ziemba, and my pronouns are she/her/hers! Originally from Buffalo, New York; I completed my undergraduate degree at SUNY Oswego, where I studied public relations and business administration. Now, I am a graduate student in my first year of the Student Affairs Administration program at Binghamton! Here, I serve as a Career Engagement Graduate Assistant within the Fleishman Center. This has allowed me the opportunity to work one-on-one with students to enhance their skill-sets, encourage their professional development, and create documents, like resumes, that highlight their capabilities. I am unsure of where exactly I would like to end up after I graduate in two years, but I know it is somewhere I can continue doing work like this.
What are you passionate about?
In a broad sense, my passion is helping others. The leadership positions I have held in the past have allowed me to work with college students during their transition to college life, or during their career exploration journey. Being able to serve as a guide during these unknown times in a student’s life is beyond satisfying, I thrive off being someone they can go to for advice or for a laugh.
What is your best piece of career or professional advice?
The best advice I can give is to get involved early. I went into my undergraduate career with a major in journalism. The dream was to become a reporter for the New York Times after graduation. Eager to explore, I joined the student newspaper where I could gain practical experience. After a semester or so, I realized I wanted something more than writing and reporting. I wanted more human interaction, and this realization allowed me to switch my major early! Getting involved will introduce you to all the amazing opportunities ahead, and you’ll learn what you enjoy doing. I ended up changing my major to public relations; this allowed me to continue writing, while also having more opportunities to network directly and work with others.
What clubs/organizations are you involved in?
Besides being a graduate assistant in Fleishman, I have a part-time job at Aldi! During my undergraduate career; I spent three summers working for New Student Orientation, I interned with Career Services, I served as the Vice President/ Public Relations Coordinator for Active Minds, and I was enrolled in multiple honors societies!
