My Experience Working as a Remote Marketing Intern

During my Spring 2023 semester, I had the opportunity to work as a Marketing Intern for WundaBar Pilates, a boutique Pilates franchise with locations all around the continental U.S. I worked directly under the executive marketing director and was lucky enough to be mentored while simultaneously taking part in marketing campaigns and designs firsthand with the company. This was such a vital experience for me as someone who was rather confused on what I wanted to do in the future and this only solidified my desire to have a marketing-related career in the future.

What helped me get this position?

I definitely would not have landed this position and opportunity without the help of the Fleishman Center. My first interactions with the Fleishman Center were when I was making active strides towards landing an internship. I knew in order to stand out it was vital for me to ensure my resume was attention-grabbing and highlighted my best attributes. This was where the Fleishman Center came in as I scheduled a resume session via Handshake. While a variety of business classes at Binghamton do cover resumes, I do believe it aided me in standing out in comparison to other applicants. This one-on-one interaction and dedicated attention to my resume was so much more helpful than getting this type of knowledge from any class. Once I had my resume up-to-par, I applied for the position via LinkedIn and reached out to the recruiter directly after sending out my resume. I included a little blurb about what I have done in the past and why I feel this position would be a great fit for me. This interaction I believe really aided in setting up a personal connection with the recruiter while displaying I was dedicated to getting the position. I was then able to get an interview and the rest was history! (Or whatever they say.)

What made this experience so valuable?

I was the only intern on a very small marketing team of two. I took this to be a major strength as I was entrusted for a lot of vital work to direct various marketing materials, social media campaigns and brand ideas. The fact this internship was remote also placed a strong impact on the work I did. I felt I was very lucky that the work I carried out was meaningful and not at all like the “horror stories” of getting lattes and running errands that you hear interns usually experience in popular media. I was given various tasks every week and had to carry them out before a weekly meeting with my team. This gave me the flexibility to manage my school work and internship work simultaneously. So, if you’re ever worried about tackling both an internship AND school, it can be done! Some work I carried out included a rebrand of the WundaCore brand that was implemented on various social media platforms, learning how to send emails to potential clients and vendors, as well as expanding on my marketing skills/analytical capabilities, giving me a real taste of what the marketing world is all about.

I implore any future marketing interns or anyone going into a communication-based field to use the resources campus has to offer, especially the Fleishman Center. With their guidance and knowledge, I feel I was able to set myself apart from the crowd and really come up on top as a professional before my internship had even begun!
