The purpose of the Mary E. Mahoney Nursing Support Group is grounded in the life of the great woman from whom this organization takes its name. Underrepresented students with a strong interest in pursuing a degree in nursing must have a solid support system behind them. Moreover, this group creates an inclusive environment for all Binghamton University students. This will allow them to cope with the rigorous demands of the program here at the Decker School of Nursing. This support group exists as a safe haven, resource center, and ultimately gives students the extra helping hand that will be a crucial factor in their successful completion of a baccalaureate degree in Nursing. Through the efforts of everyone, a productive and comfortable environment can exist, which will allow all to eventually obtain the success that Mary so humbly did many decades ago.
The goals of this organization are as follows:
A. To facilitate learning and academic networking of minority undergraduate nursing students and prospective nursing students through organized study groups, a mentorship program and tutorial sessions. Students will be exposed to new efficient methods for approaching their studies through advice from guest speakers and upperclassmen members.
B. To promote professional and personal growth in minority students by providing a forum for discussing students concerns, expectations and how to cope with their busy academic lives. ´â¢ Bi- weekly meetings will be held on different topics promoting professional or personal growth
C. To provide encouragement for minority students through emotional and academic support. One-on-one discussions, peer counseling, and assistance with courses are important ways to accomplish this.
D. To aid students in the development of their self-confidence and esteem, which will give, make them ambitious and seek more out of their future nursing careers.
These goals represent a need to establish an organization that is sensitive and responsive to the needs of minority students in nursing.
