Chartered in 2009, the Pre-Medical Association stems from a desire to create a pre-medical community for the general body of students at Binghamton University. Through our efforts, we aim to provide students with information regarding medical education and understanding the application processes. Our meetings throughout the semester encompass a wide range of information related to the prospective medical school applicant. Focus is placed upon familiarizing the student with the requirements for medical school matriculation, and ways in which the student may make him/herself a more competitive candidate.
Steps are taken towards providing a basic understanding of the field of medicine to ensure a student’s interest in the field’s academic pursuit. Our organization provides a medium for the discussion and the presentation of information related to medical admissions. This includes, but is not limited to, presentations from institutional faculty in the medical field, pre-health advisors, medical students, bioethicists, healthcare advocates, various medical professionals, and admission directors for medical colleges of interest. These presentations act to stimulate interest in current topics of the medical sciences, as well as provide academic structure for pre-medical students.
This organization also strives for the active involvement of students within the community. Volunteer opportunities are provided for members that range from general philanthropy to medical exposure and shadowing experience. All active members are provided with professional and educational workshops, access to a resource library of pre-medical and MCAT texts, and membership discounts to Kaplan preparatory courses. Through our organization, inspired members have the ability to establish standing committees, wherein they may develop any beneficial program or activity for the general student body. Membership into the organization is of no cost and is encouraged for all students, no matter their field of study.
