Ben is the Vice President and the Retail Market Leader for First Merchant’s Bank. His main charge is to review, develop, and implement strategies to reach and exceed sales goals at over 14 banking centers in his region.

For a person to really succeed in a role like mine, it takes so time and it takes some patience. And it also takes experience, that's something I had to learn really early on and when I was just coming out of colleges is that, in college we get a really great foundation and a lot of skills on how to problem solve and those are great to have and we need those. But, we also in a role like mine, need to have a background of just experiences. You need to start as a teller. You need to know what that role is and that interaction with that customer, in order to coach it. So, that would be... Yes, there's trade magazines, of course, there's seminars, there's continuing education, all those are important, they help you get to the next level, they help you go to that next degree, if you will. But, experiences have really helped me. I've had every role in the retail banking sector in the last eight years and every one of those experiences in every single day I held a position in the bank, it's helped me with my decision-making now. My position now, is a lot about forward thinking, planning, and making the right decision for the betterment of the bank and customer. And I got to be, you can't get that... Through a textbook you can get a lot of basic knowledge about why we do certain things, why we set rates a certain way, or whatever it may be. But, some decision-making, you just have to know through experience.
