Exploring Perspectives from Current Students in the Program

For many students, the decision to pursue higher education extends beyond the bounds of their undergraduate studies. It’s a pathway paved with choices that can shape their future career trajectories. Binghamton University’s Harpur MBA 4+1 program stands as a beacon of opportunity for those eager to blend their liberal arts education with the dynamic realm of business. To uncover whether this accelerated track is the right fit for you, let’s delve into the insights shared by Olivia Martelli and Gabriella Martelli, graduands of the program.

The Motivation Behind the Pursuit

Olivia and Gabriella, who graduated with their Bachelors in Psychology last May, decided to embark on the journey to achieve an MBA through the 4+1 program at the School of Management, fueled by their aspirations for a versatile career path. For those unfamiliar, an MBA is a Masters of Business Administration, which provides graduate students with practical and theoretical applications necessary to pursue a career in business. With that knowledge, Olivia recognized the MBA’s flexibility and its potential to open doors across various industries. Moreover, Olivia’s eagerness to extend her stay at Binghamton University played a pivotal role in her choice. Completing her undergraduate studies a year early, she seized the opportunity to dive into the MBA program, building upon the strong academic foundation she had cultivated.

Olivia reflects, “I wasn’t ready to leave Binghamton yet as I graduated a year early.” The trend of early graduation is fueled by many things– particularly, in its cost effectiveness. Saving on an entire year of college puts many students in a better financial situation than they otherwise would have been if they stayed in college for the traditional four years. For those not ready to leave school because of an early graduation, a 4+1 program provides students with the ability to stay the traditional four years and get two degrees out of it! Through the 4+1 MBA program, you are paying for an entire year of master’s classes with the price tag of a bachelor’s course tuition– it’s certainly not difficult to see the appeal behind that!

Aligning Academic Experiences with Career Aspirations

With so many ways to receive college credit in high school, from AP classes, to dual enrollment, more students are graduating from college early than they ever have before. Nowadays, it seems like every student I talk to at Binghamton walked into college with a wheelbarrow full of college credits they received prior to beginning their undergraduate studies! When speaking to Olivia and Gabriella, both students emphasized the significance of their academic backgrounds in preparing them for the rigors of the MBA program. Olivia’s exposure to college-level courses during high school primed her for the accelerated nature of higher education. Gabriella navigated her transition into a completely different college by quickly adapting to group work, presentations, and public speaking—a departure from the exam-centric approach of her previous studies. For students interested in pursuing an MBA from SOM after years of studying at Harpur, there are plenty of resources to help you navigate the transition into such a novel world. There are various clubs and organizations on campus, which can be accessed through B–Engaged, that assist students interested in the Business world– regardless of if they attend Harpur or SOM for their undergraduate studies. Standout associations, which are open to everyone, include the Finance Society, the Society for Human Resource Management, and many more. Engaging in extracurricular activities such as Women in Business equipped her with invaluable insights into the business world, despite not being in the School of Management for her undergraduate studies. Beyond the extracurricular, the Fleishman Center is a great help for students who are pursuing a liberal arts or STEM education, providing students with the tools, services, knowledge, and resources to prepare them for their future careers. For students interested in the MBA 4+1 program, using the Fleishman Center to aid in your professional development is incredibly important– enabling students to ease their transition to the School of Management.

The Intersection of Passion and Academia

For Olivia, the MBA resonated with her desire to make a broader impact within the corporate landscape. She recognized the transformative power of an MBA in influencing organizational dynamics and leveraging emerging technologies. Reflecting on her academic journey, Olivia stated “I thought the MBA was the best decision for my career path, an MBA is very versatile and you can do a lot with it.” With the rapid evolution of technology, social media, and artificial intelligence, Olivia perceived a business acumen as indispensable across various roles and industries. Olivia explains, “I want to go into a field where I’m impacting people, and with an MBA, I’m not just impacting a small group of people but an entire business and corporation.” For students considering applying for the program, think about if the program can enable you to blend your passions with your academic interests and career aspirations.

Charting a Course for the Future

Looking beyond graduation, Olivia and Gabriella envision the additional academic year as a catalyst for their professional trajectories. They emphasize the invaluable mentorship and networking avenues provided by esteemed professors, which serve as stepping stones to future career endeavors. Their resounding endorsement of the program underscores its transformative impact on personal and professional growth.

Gabriella shares, “I learned a lot from well respected professors who have a bunch of experience in the business world, networking through them absolutely gives you more opportunities for careers.”

Is the 4+1 MBA Right for You?

In weighing the decision to pursue a 4+1 MBA, it’s essential to reflect on your aspirations, academic preparedness, and appetite for accelerated learning. For students like Olivia and Gabriella, the program’s fusion of liberal arts principles with business acumen proved instrumental in shaping their career trajectories. If you’re drawn to the prospect of expanding your skill set, seizing networking opportunities, and accelerating your path to success, the 4+1 MBA may indeed be the ideal avenue for your academic and professional journey.
