hireBING by Handshake
hireBING by Handshake is more than just a job board; it’s a hub for connecting Binghamton University students with employers, discovering opportunities, attending events, scheduling appointments with the career center, and networking with recruiters. Employers on hireBING by Handshake are looking specifically to hire current students or recent graduates, which makes it one of the most tailored and effective platforms you can use during your career journey.
Creating a Handshake Profile
Building out an updated and accurate Handshake profile is essential to making sure you receive the most relevant job and internship recommendations. It also ensures that employers in your industry of interest are able to find you when searching for applicants. Here are our top three tips when it comes to completing your Handshake profile:
Update your career interests by selecting the types of jobs, industries, and job functions you’re interested in. When selecting cities you are interested in, choose areas you think you may like to work in or near. These preferences can always be updated, but making selections helps the platform (and recruiters) know which jobs and internships to recommend to you.
Build out your profile by adding experiences such as work experience, courses, organizations, and skills. Much of this information can be pulled directly from your resume, so if you haven’t created one yet, start by downloading one of our templates and having it reviewed by a career consultant before applying for opportunities on Handshake. Personalize your profile further with a photo, cover photo, and brief summary. Students can take free professional headshots using the self-service Iris Photo Booth located in The Fleishman Career Center. The summary is brief (only 300 characters, or 1-2 sentences), so focus on what you’re looking for on Handshake and any experiences or skills you may like to highlight!
“Psychology major interested in mental health, human behavior, and helping professions. Looking for opportunities to gain experience through research, community outreach, and internships.”
“Computer Science student with experience in Java, Python, and collaborative coding projects. Interested in software development internships and opportunities to apply technical and problem-solving skills.”
“MPA student passionate about community engagement and public service. Interested in nonprofit and government roles focused on policy, leadership, and creating meaningful impact.”
Make your profile public and become more visible to employers. Once your profile is complete, go to your privacy settings to update your visibility on Handshake.
Searching for Jobs & Internships
Handshake offers a variety of tools and filters to help you customize your job and internship search based on your interests, career goals, and preferences. You can search by industry, location, job type, and more, including a dedicated filter for on-campus employment opportunities.
Find curated opportunities using the Binghamton Collections feature. Binghamton Collections allows you to filter opportunities by industry and/or employer characteristics from a selection developed by the employer relations managers at The Fleishman Center. We have dedicated collections for each of our industry career clusters, along with options like “Popular with Alumni” and “Invests in Diversity.”
Save your job searches and turn on job alerts to quickly find opportunities using filters that match your interests and receive notifications when similar positions are posted. Once you have applied the keywords and search filters, a purple banner above the search results will state “Notify me about new jobs like this.” Enable this feature to save your search and activate notifications when new opportunities are posted. Then, click “Manage notifications” to edit the frequency and method you’d like to receive alerts. Don’t forget to save your changes! Just getting started with this feature? The Saving Job Searches and Receiving Job Alerts article provides step-by-step instructions.
Interacting with Employers on Handshake
Handshake is more than a job board; it’s also a tool to help you build connections directly with employers. The following platform features will help you interact with employers to learn more about opportunities, demonstrate interest, and expand your professional network.
Follow employers that interest you to receive notifications about new positions and upcoming events. Additionally, some employers on Handshake can view which students have followed their company profile, so it’s also a great strategy to signal your interest!
Message employers on Handshake to learn more about a role or organization and gather insights that can help you tailor your application materials. When reaching out, introduce yourself, explain your interest in the role or company, and ask one or two thoughtful questions to show genuine curiosity. You can also apply the “Employer is open to messaging” filter while searching for jobs and internships to find opportunities where employers welcome messages from potential applicants.
Scheduling Career Center Appointments
Handshake is also the platform used to schedule 1:1 career consulting appointments. To book an appointment, click “Career Center” in the left navigation menu, then select “Appointments.” From there, you can choose the career topic you’d like to discuss, select whether you’d prefer to meet in person or virtually, and pick a time that fits your schedule.
In addition to year-round appointment offerings, the Fleishman Career Center also provides drop-in career consulting during the academic year. Drop-ins are available Monday–Friday from 12:00 p.m.–3:40 p.m., with no appointment required.
