New Student Resource: Using AI in Your Career Development
Artificial intelligence is becoming part of how many students explore careers, search for opportunities, develop application materials, and prepare for interviews. Like any tool, its effectiveness depends on how it is used. To help students use AI in ways that strengthen rather than hinder their career development, the Fleishman Career Center has created a comprehensive guide, “Using AI in Your Career Development” featuring best practices, ethical considerations, and sample prompts for career exploration, job searching, resumes, networking, interviewing, and more.
While we recognize that not everyone embraces AI due to the important environmental, sustainability, and ethical concerns surrounding its use, we also know many students are already using these tools. In pursuit of serving all students, we’ve created a resource to help them use AI thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively.
Faculty and staff are encouraged to share this resource with students when discussing career exploration, internship and job searches, resumes, graduate school preparation, or other career-related assignments. It can help students engage with AI more intentionally while developing career readiness skills.
How Faculty and Staff Can Use It
Encourage students to use AI to:
- Brainstorm career paths related to course concepts or disciplinary skills.
- Identify transferable skills developed through a project, lab, presentation, or research experience.
- Compare workplace cultures or employers within a field.
- Analyze a job description to better understand industry expectations.
- Generate thoughtful questions before an informational interview with an alumnus or employer.
